A Parish and considerable village on the coast and near the point of the promotory of land between the estuaries of the Crouch and Blackwater.
It has a wharf and Coastguard Station.
It is supposed that the Roaman settlement of Othona or Ithanchester was situated here, and Roman remains have been found.
The Lodge now the Rectory, built about 1785, was formerly the seat of the Rev Sir Henry Bate Dudley, rector.It is a neat mansion, with an observatory on the roof and Ionic columns so arranged as to form the chimneys.
