Factual and anecdotal information Fact Source 1837 The ancient chapel of St Peter is now used as a barn PG 1837 A fair is held on June 24th for Toys PG 1887 A Parish and considerable village on the coast and near the point of the promotory of land between the estuaries of the Crouch and Blackwater. It has a wharf and Coastguard Station. It is supposed that the Roaman settlement of Othona or Ithanchester was situated here, and Roman remains have been found. The Lodge now the Rectory, built about 1785, was formerly the seat of the Rev Sir Henry Bate Dudley, rector.It is a neat mansion, with an observatory on the roof and Ionic columns so arranged as to form the chimneys.
