A small town consisting chiefly of one street and pleasantly situated on the north side of the Crouch, which is navigable for the largest of ships up to the town and for vessels of 300 tons for 10 miles above.
There is a good Quay. Boat, barge and ship building area carried on her but the principal product of the place are oysters, bred in beds in the river. The Oyster Company is an extensive concern but there are other oyster merchants.
The marshes afford fine grazing ground.
