Marriage Certificates

Many people researching family history check Birth certificates and death certificates but overlook marriage certificates. This can be a mistake as they provide a mine of information. Some ideas for research are provided in italics Since 1937 the below information is recorded:-

Date and place of marriage

check the church for a few years after for possible christenings

Names and ages of bride and groom

Confirm existing details

Occupation of bride and groom

Check occupation lists like TUC logs or Army records

Marital status of both parties

If widow or widower check for previous marriages/children

Addresses of both parties

check census before and after for these addresses

Names and occupation of fathers of both parties

verify information and check occupational logs

Names of two witnesses and minister

witnesses were usually favourite relatives - a different surname may be a married sister or cousin. Check backwards on the name given.

THE SHIPS LIST

The ships List is one of the best free resources to be found on the internet.

Most of us will find that our family history includes at least one member who has emigrated.

The ships list will help you trace just how  and when Uncle Joe managed to get to Sydney and give you a start point in tracing his history in Oz.

The site includes over 2000 links to passenger lists for Australia, US, Canada and South Africa's as well as details of shipping lines, ship wrecks , immigration reports and contemporary newspaper reports.

On a personal basis the ships list is always my start point for immigration enquiries.

If you make an entry with a family name etc you may well hear from someone else with an interest in that name.

And its FREE

Have you got some family black and white photos?

They can be a great record of your ancestors if you can put names to the faces or buildings.

If you can't they are not of much value.

Ask any older relatives to put names to the pictures and write the names and rough dates on the back of the photo.

Or

if any of your relatives have photos with names why not compare your pictures and see if you can match anyone.

Google is a very powerful search engine. Given the growth of on line information, putting your relatives name into the search box and hitting search may bring up an entry.

If you search "john Smith" rather than john smith you will only bring up results for john smith rather than all the johns and all the smiths..

Be prepared to look through several pages

In early Victorian Essex although morals in some areas were low a very moral public face was taken.

The upshot was that there were quite a number of illegitimate births. Birth certificates often listed only the mothers name.

To deflect moral criticism when the mother later married the child was often referred to by the surname of the new husband. EG at the age of 4 years all references to John Smith finish but John Brown suddenly appears.

For the genealogist the problem is that we don't know what had happened to John Smith and can trace no birth record for John Brown.

If an unexpected child appears in the records it's always worth searching for births using the child's details but with the mothers maiden name.
