Althorn is about eight miles from Maldon.

From the church-steeple here is a very good prospect intothe Swin, as also of Tiptree heath, Danbury, Langdon Hills, part of Kent, and all Rochford hundred.

Al- thorn Hall is a little way south of the church; and the house called Althorn Barns is a little to the west.

ALTHORNE, a parish in the hundred of Dengey, county of Essex.

The living is a discharged vicarage, valued in the king's books at £14, and in the parliamentary returns at £134; with an endowment of £200 royal bounty, and £200 private benefaction.

The church is dedicated to St Andrew, and the patron, in 1829, was J. Robinson, Esq.

The estuary of the river Crouch is in this parish, and in order to protect the low lands from inundation, there are extensive embankments that were constructed by labourers from Holland, whose families still remain here.

Population, in 1801, 286; and in 1831, 352.
