Clergy in the Dengie Hundred in 1648

In 1648 England was once again turbulent. One of the concerns raised was the efficiency of the Clergy.

Many of the clergy had there posts due to the sequestration of benefices often for political reasons. Far from preventing the practice sequestration continued during the mid 1660's with Ministers often staying in post for less than a year.

A directory was completed in 1647 and published in 1648 listing Clergy and Church Elders and measuring whether they were considered able.

The list was reprinted at a later date with an addendum featuring subsequent Ministers
