Coastguard Index Page

A Coastguard service has played an important part in the life of coastal Essex since customs men were first introduced in the 12th century.

They are also of strong genealogical interest given the employment rule that ensured  that recruits were posted to areas where they had no family.

This was required to prevent collaboration between smugglers and Coastguard's.

Essex was a hotbed of smuggling and as such had one of the highest populations of Coastguard's in the country living on Watch vessels, barracks or specially built houses.

Essex Family History has a number of pages about the Coastguard covering history as well as listing some of the Coastguard's who served in our area.
