Dengey, about 13 miles from Maldon.

This village is situated between Southminster and Tillingham. Danes ig, or island, was the origin of this name-

Dengey Hall stands near the west end of the church, and the manor-house of Bacons is about half a mile north of it.

Here is a fine prospect of the sea from the churchyard.

It contains 18 houses and 145 inhabitants.

Dengie (3 m. from Southminster) is a very small village, but gives its name to a hundred.

The church (St James) is much over-restored and of little interest. What is old is chiefly time of Edward III. The rood stairway remains.
