Parish Registers Before national registration of Birth, Marriage and Death began in 1837 the best course of this information was in the Registers held by Parish Churches. The Rector or in many cases the Curate were usually literate men in an illiterate world which meant that for the majority of people the Registers is the only time that their names are recorded. Nowadays most registers are help by the County Records Office at Chelmsford although there are a few churches that still keep their own records. The start date of Registers vary considerably throughout our area.
