FRANCIS FRITH IMAGES The best national set of images are owned by a publishing company called Francis Frith. Francis Frith was a Victorian photographer who pioneered picture postcards. On his death the family business continued following the standards laid down by Francis Frith until it closed in 1971 rather than lower it's standards by competing with the mass manufactured modern postcards. The Frith archive contains over 365,000 photographs of some 7,000 towns and villages throughout Britain. Taken between 1860 and 1970 these form a topographical record of Britain without equal and is recognised as the only photographic collection of national importance remaining in private hands and so to be available for public purchase.. Frith has used modern high quality digital imaging on the original photographic plated to bring up the best possible digital copy of the image making Frith Pictures amongst the best old photographs available. This web site has over 50 of Francis Frith's super pictures of Eastern Essex. You are free to browse and can connect to the Frith web site if you wish to download or purchase any of the images.
